What Makes Coho Salmon Ikura Special?
Coho salmon ikura is known for its beautiful reddish-orange color, medium-sized eggs, and rich, distinctive flavor. Compared to keta salmon roe, coho ikura typically has smaller eggs with a more delicate, creamy texture.
Each pearl delivers a satisfying burst of savory ocean flavor, followed by a subtle, naturally bittersweet finish. Its balanced richness makes coho salmon caviar an excellent choice for both traditional Japanese dishes and gourmet appetizers.
Like other varieties of wild salmon roe, coho ikura provides naturally occurring omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and essential nutrients, including vitamin B12. It's a flavorful way to enjoy the nutritional benefits of wild Alaskan seafood.
Wild Alaskan Coho Salmon Roe
Coho salmon, scientifically known as Oncorhynchus kisutch, is also commonly called silver salmon. Its roe is recognized for its vibrant color, rich taste, and delicate texture.
Coho ikura is an excellent alternative to traditional keta salmon caviar, offering a unique flavor profile that seafood lovers appreciate.
Also known as coho salmon roe, silver salmon ikura, coho red caviar, or wild Alaskan salmon caviar, this specialty seafood is perfect for Japanese sushi restaurants, gourmet entertaining, and home chefs looking to elevate their dishes.
Enjoy coho ikura over sushi rice, in traditional gunkan-maki sushi, on blinis with crème fraîche, or simply served chilled with your favorite accompaniments.
What Is Ikura?
Ikura is a traditional Japanese delicacy made from salmon roe that has been carefully separated from the roe skein and lightly cured with salt or a seasoned marinade. Proper processing and freezing help preserve the eggs' freshness, flavor, and delicate texture.
Ikura has a long history in Japanese cuisine, where it is commonly served over sushi rice, in hand rolls, and as a topping for seafood dishes.
Over time, advances in seafood harvesting, processing, and preservation have helped make salmon roe increasingly popular around the world.
Today, ikura remains a cherished ingredient in Japanese cuisine and beyond, appreciated for its beautiful appearance, unique flavor, and satisfying texture.
A Delicacy Enjoyed Around the World
Salmon caviar is also popular in Russia and Eastern Europe, where fish roe has been enjoyed for generations. The Japanese word "ikura" is derived from the Russian word "ikra," meaning fish roe or caviar.
In Russian cuisine, salmon roe is traditionally served with blini (small pancakes), sour cream, buttered bread, or eggs.
Whether you're preparing traditional Japanese sushi, elegant appetizers, or a special seafood dish, Wild Alaskan Coho Salmon Ikura Red Caviar brings the distinctive taste of Alaska's wild waters to your table.
OUR FISH SOURCE
Our salmon roe is harvested from wild fish caught exclusively by small boat Alaskan fishermen in the Prince William Sound fishing district just outside of Cordova, Alaska.
The fishing season starts in June and ends in September. The men and women in our fleet are dedicated to the best handling practices, such as bleeding every fish immediately after it comes out of the water, using slushed ice or refrigerated sea water to minimize the pressure on the meat and keeping their fish holds at 32 – 36 degrees Fahrenheit to maximize the shelf life of the product while they transport and deliver their catch to our processor - Copper River Seafoods

FROZEN GUARANTEE
Frozen shipments are shipped with ample dry ice to sustain the shipment duration. The dry ice is sublimating during the shipping process so your shipment may arrive with no ice left in the box, but it is good and safe to consume as long as it remains frozen.
If your shipment arrives partially thawed on the edges, it is still good and safe to consume. If the frozen products arrive completely thawed out or damaged in any other way, please take pictures and/or videos with as many visual details as possible and contact us for a possible refund or reship.
Alaska Fresh Seafood is not responsible for thawed packages/orders that were delivered on time per email notifications to customer, but left unattended on not collected by the customer in time.

ASK YOUR FISHMONGER
How do I eat caviar?
If you really want to appreciate the taste and texture of caviar, use a non-metallic spoon to scoop a little bit, put it on your tongue and pop it against the roof of your mouth.
Otherwise caviar is best served as a cold topping or condiment. The options are limitless - you can put it on sushi, mix it into a rice bowl, put it on top of your cooked salmon fillet, mix it with scrambled eggs, eat it with smoked salmon or lox, or eat it with bagel and cream cheese.

Is caviar good for you?
Yes, caviar is incredibly good for your cardiovascular and brain health, because it’s packed with essential nutrients.
It contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA, protein, phosphorus, selenium, potassium, zinc, and vitamins B12 and D.
It also contains astaxanthin, which is a potent antioxidant 6,000-times more powerful than vitamin-C.
What’s the difference between keta, sockeye and pink salmon ikura red caviar?
They’re all salted salmon eggs (roe), but vary in size, color and flavor.
Keta salmon ikura has the largest diameter eggs, with bright orange color, gentle pop, and milder, sophisticated taste.
Sockeye roe is the smallest of the three, with bright red color thanks to the high content powerful antioxidant astaxanthin. It has a strong salmon-forward flavor.
Pink roe has a distinct fresh flavor, bright orange color and medium egg size. Versatile, delicious and guaranteed to impress.
Is the fish farmed or wild?
Everything we sell is 100% wild caught. We only sell Alaskan seafood and fish farms are not legal in Alaska.

Does it arrive frozen?
Yes! All of our orders are 100% guaranteed to arrive frozen. If there is no ice left in the box upon delivery, but the fish is still frozen ( even if it’s a little soft on the edges), everything is ok and safe to eat (or put in the freezer).

Meet your Fishmongers
With 17+ years living in Cordova, Alaska, owners Adra and Juro built relationships directly with local fishermen and ran seafood processing operations, giving us the inside perspective most seafood companies simply don't have.
We hand-pick each fish from trusted boats, then partner with elite processor Copper River Seafoods (where Juro worked for 13 years) to ensure every fillet is perfectly cut, flash-frozen within hours, and vacuum-sealed to lock in peak freshness for up to two years.
While there's a myth that "never frozen" is best, the truth is unless you live on the Alaska coast, our flash-frozen fillets will taste fresher than anything that's been shipped fresh for days. We guarantee that our proven boat-to-box process delivers the quality consistency you deserve, with the personal expertise you can trust.
